5 Foods That May Help You Live Longer

Feb 13, 2018

Food is a necessity to survive, but it's also a way to bond with people, tell stories, be creative and it can even help you live longer...if you're eating the right things! With the help of Keck Medicine of USC we came up with a list of 5 foods that can help you live longer!

1. Leafy Greens

It shouldn't be a surprise that the most nutritious and fiber-filled greens include kale, mustard greens, broccoli rabe, bok choy, swiss chard and of course, good old broccoli and spinach.

TIP: Be aware that when making leafy green choices — iceberg lettuce contains almost no nutrients and little fiber. The more deep green you see the more nutrients they likely contain.

2. Olive Oil

Olive oil is one of the few widely used culinary oils. It contains about 75 percent of its fat in the form of oleic acid. Oleic acid has several benefits and provides a proper balance of total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and HDL cholesterol in the body.

3. Flaxseeds

Looking for a rich source of dietary fiber, flaxseeds are the way to go! Flaxseeds, also known as linseeds, provide a robust source of nutrients and vitamins including vitamin B1 and manganese as well as essential fatty acids like omega-3.

4. Avocados

Adding avocados to a salad or sandwich does a lot more than add flavor to dull food! As the only fruit that has monounsaturated fat, the avocado can lower LDL (bad) cholesterol levels, while raising the amount of HDL (good) cholesterol in your body.

5. Apples

Avoiding sweets can be tricky, but you can satisfy that craving with added health benefits by crunching on an apple. A recent Dutch study showed that eating a large number of fruits such as apples, pears, pears and bananas with white flesh protects the body against the incidence of stroke.

TIP: You can always add apples to green salads and get your health benefits!
